Childhood Songs

One kind of Merry-go-Round

A song I remember from 3rd grade

Mmm bloop-bloop, Mmm bloop-bloop, Mmm bloop, bloop, bloop
Hear the music make a bloopy, bloopy, jingle, jangle sound,
See the horses go a prancing and a dancing all around.
We will pay the man our money, then we'll ride and ride and ride
On the very merry, merry-go-round
Riding side by side
Bloop, Bloop! listen here

Wouldn't you like to be a whale and sail serenely by,
An eighty foot whale from the tip to your tail and a tiny briny eye?
Wouldn't you love to wallow where nobody says come out?
Wouldn't you love to swallow and blow all the brine about?
Wouldn't you like to be so clean and never have to wash, I mean?
Wouldn't you love to spout? Oh, yes, just think.
A feather of spray, sailing away, rising and sinking, and sinking and rising,
And blowing the brine about!  Listen here

I think this song is just plain fun. Sorry cannot give credit where credit is due. It was in a child's songbook that we used when I attended Mt. Zion Grade School in fourth grade 1955-56. I have remembered the song all these years as many others that I may list. If I have info as to who wrote and published them I will list it.

Stars are the windows of Heaven
I have to put a disclaimer on this song as far as content.  It is one I remember from my childhood that we listened to on a yellow 45 RPM record.  This would have been before my becoming a Christian and my learning that this is someone's creative imagination.  The Bible does not support this kind of thinking about the stars or angels and what they do.  That being said, this song is one that I committed to memory and sang over and over so that I might be able to remember it.  It gave me fond thoughts as a child. However, 1 Corinthians 13:11 "When I was a child I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child:  but when I became a man, I put away childish things."  That is not a sad thing, it is a good thing because God has changed me to understand His great goodness and mercy to me about Himself and His Marvelous Creation.
Stars are the windows of heaven,
Where Angels peep through.
Up in the sky, they keep an eye
On girls and boys like you.
They cry each time you are naughty,
Their teardrops are the rain.
But when you're good they are smiling
And they shine again.
Stars are the windows of heaven
Where Angels peep through.

My mother says, Angels have a book,
They make a mark each time they look.
A cross when you're good,
and an X when your bad,
Their the best friends that we ever had.

They cry each time you are naughty,
Their teardrops are the rain,
But when you're good they are smiling,
And they shine again.
Stars are the windows of heaven,
Where Angels peep through.

I listened to an Anne Murray version of this on You Tube and it has more words than the rendition that was on the old record we had.

Little Orley and the Cabbage Worm

I just discovered this album cover on Facebook.  I did not know that Uncle Lumpy was Mr. Greenjeans on Captain Kangaroo in later years.  I referenced having this record in my post "looking for a yellow 45 rpm record.  This was a yellow record.  Thank you to my brother Bob for directing me to the internet to find this information.  I thought it was too obscure but I guess nothing is too obscure for the internet. :-)

Sweet and Low

I think this song was one we learned in fourth grade. I have sung this lullaby to all of my children (3) and nearly all of my grandchildren.
 I love it.

Sweet and Low, sweet and low,
Wind of the western sea,
Blow, blow, breathe and blow
Wind of the western sea.
Over the rolling waters go,
Come from the dying moon and blow,
Blow him again to me,
While my little one, while my pretty one sleeps.

Fifth Grade Song  I learned Circa 1956-57

Once in the dear dead days beyond recall,
When on the world the mists began to fall,
Out of our dreams that rose in happy throng,
Low to our hearts love sang an old sweet song.
And in the dusk while fell the firelight's gleam,
Softly it wove itself into our dreams.
Just a song at twilight,
When the lights are low.
And the flickering shadows,
Softly come and go.
Though the heart be weary, sad the day and long
Still to us at twilight comes love's old song,
Comes love's old sweet song.

Tell me Why the Stars do Shine--Junior High Circa 1958-59

Tell my why the stars do shine,
Tell me why the ivy twine,
Tell me why the sky's so blue,
And I will tell you why I love you.

Because God made the stars to shine,
Because God made the ivy twine,
Because God made the sky so blue,
That is the reason why I love you.

Oh Mister Moon, moon, bright and silvery moon,
Won't you please shine down on me, on me,
Oh Mister Moon, moon, bright and silvery moon,
Hiding behind that tree.
I want to shoot that possum with my big shotgun,
Shoot that possum for he starts to run,
Oh Mister Moon, moon bright and silvery moon,
Won't you please shine down on, please shine down on,
please shine dooowwn on me--shine down on meeeeeeee!

Hi, Sandy - I really enjoyed your recording of "the Whale Song." We found it in a school songbook, New Music Horizons, Fifth Book. Silver Burdett Co., 1946, 1953. Lyrics were written by Geoffrey Dearmer; music by Hoagy Carmichael. Yours is the only recording I've found of the song, and it's a very good one.
Here's the information we have about the song: http://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=71873&messages=6
All the best to you.

Thank you, Joe Offer for your comment!!So glad to get the information about where the "Whale Song" comes from. I recognize the name, "New Music Horizons". I didn't know Hoagy Carmichael had written the music either...that is very cool! I will check out your link. Thanks again, Sandykaye
